sweet hard birthday cider

...at long last the talk isn't cheap. after almost a year of talking about brewing hard cider we finally made our way over to the modern brewer on mass ave in cambridge to buy our three-gallon glass jug to store juice from our bushel of apples...behold the sweet results just in time to celebrate seth's 27th birthday!

getting randy with ayn

liz just finished reading ayn rand's ANTHEM (1938); a striking & damning reaction to the emergence of the nation state. like 1984 but short, precise and uncomplicated. finishes with an overarticulation and obsession with the individual self.

......anthem is written as the diary of equality 7-2521, a young man living in a future in which people have lost all knowledge of individualism, to the point of not even knowing words like "i" or "mine." everyone lives and works in collective groups, with all aspects of daily life dictated by "councils" -- the council of cocations, the council of scholars, etc. his curiosity leads him to forbidden discoveries and eventually to exile.....

"and now we look upon the earth and sky. this spread of naked rock and peaks and moonlight is like a world ready to be born, a world that waits."

weekend arcade

fun october weekend that felt like summer. saw wes anderson's quirky darjeeling limited (liz says: 2.5 stars because random for the sake of being random is not profound, seth says: 4 stars for the hilarious slap stick) about three brothers train travels across india. see the trailer @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcFBOsfoWxU

saturday we begged punks for money for pih at the arcade fire show at randall's island - which turned out to be an amazing show by the way, even if the opening bands made us feel like 80's punk rockers. then at midnight, two bottles of wine on the east side with ian and dara.

on the way, liz snapped this hot shot of the 4,5,6 subway:

sunday, bougie and indulgent serve yourself brunch at the city bakery (www.thecitybakery.com). from now on we pledge to keep it simple with their $1.60 never-ending mug of coffee and their caramelized french toast - eggy sweet & perfect. seth was eyeing the $25 chocolate buddhas covered in edible gold, and they said that it's the cupcakes that's making manhattan feel yuppyfied? rire

acadia

if ever there were a town more obsessed with blueberries than bar harbor, we're not sure we could tell ya. we just spent last week up in acadia national park, off the coast of maine for some great camping + beautiful views.

(read: golden opportunity for seth to break in his newly acquired ultra posh camping cookware.)

we set up our tent at blackwoods campground and then asked the ranger where all the locals go for dinner leading us to the ultra chill digs of the lompoc cafe - complete with bacci court and blueberry beer on tap. (www.atlanticbrewing.com/beer.html)

when we got back to the campsite, after a failed attempt to keep the fire going, we resorted to bringing all of our smore making supplies inside the tent with us, zipped ourselves into our sleeping bags and then continued to gorge ourselves on all of the chocolate-graham gooeyness in the raw.

we spent the rest of the trip exploring some of the different coves, lakes and habors - including a spot called 'thunderhole' (a name which strangely none of the locals thought was funny - we, on the other hand, laughed like middle schoolers every time)

hiking the rocky west ridge of mount cadillac

enjoying the beautiful but freezing waves at sandy beach

and going on tandem sunset kayak trip around the porcupine islands.
